Rhodiola is a member of the Crassulaceae plant family and it is found growing in the arctic mountainous regions of Asia and Eastern Europe. It has been used as a traditional medicine in these parts of the world for many centuries, featuring strongly in Russian history, traditional Chinese medicine, and in Viking and Sherpa communities.

For the past 70 years, Russian scientists have conducted a huge variety of research into Rhodiola and its benefits. A study in Armenia looked at 56 young doctors, all in good health, working at the Armenian State Medical University. Over 3 periods of a fortnight each, the young doctors were tested both before and after night duty. Participants were either given a Rhodiola supplement or a placebo. Other research into the effect Rhodiola has on concentration was conducted with 161 cadets, aged between 19 and 21. These cadets, all experiencing fatigue and stress, were tested for concentration and cognitive ability on two different doses. The study looked at neuron levels in the brains of these rats, and established that rats treated with Rhodiola Rosea-treated group experienced an increase in these levels, with neurons recovering to a normal quantity [source:20].

In 2015, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) tested Rhodiola against sertraline (a commonly prescribed antidepressant) and a placebo in 58 adults with depression. The research concluded that no significant differences were found between the groups, but that those who had taken Rhodiola had suffered fewer side effects [source:26]. This means that Rhodiola can compete with some of the major pharmacological treatments widely prescribed for depression.

Rhodiola also has an anti-anxiety effect, as a study involving 80 participants has shown. These “mildly anxious” individuals experienced a “significant reduction in self-reported, anxiety, stress, anger, confusion and depression at 14 days and a significant improvement in total mood” after taking Rhodiola Rosea on a daily basis [source:27]. In addition, a small study of 10 adults suffering from anxiety demonstrated a noticeable improvement in their symptoms after supplementing them with 360mg Rhodiola every day over 10 weeks, including a decreased score on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale [source:28].
